Pearl

✷✷
  ✷

View from Cold mountain

In my former days of bitter poverty
every night I counted other people’s wealth.
Today I thought and thought, then thought it through:
Everyone really must make their own.(
I dug and found a hidden treasure,
a crystal pearl, completely pure.
Even if that blue-eyed foreigner of great ability
wanted to buy it secretly and take it away,
I would immediately tell him
that this pearl has no price.
Han-Shan and Shih-Te

✷

How could you reach the pearl
by only looking at the sea?
If you seek the pearl,
be a diver.
The diver needs several qualities:
He must trust his rope and his life
to the Friend's hand,
he must stop breathing,
and he must jump.
Rumi

✷

Give yourself a kiss.
If you want to hold the beautiful one,
hold yourself to yourself.
Rumi

✷

The birds have flown to freedom
The cage lies empty
Your happy songs bring me the scent of heaven
Please keep singing!
Rumi

✷

These shells of bodies in the world,
Though they are all living
By grace of the Sea of the Soul-
Yet there isn't a pearl in every shell.
Open your eyes and look
Into the heart of each one.
Find out what is within each one,
For that costly Pearl is rarely found.
Rumi

✷

Man is concealed beneath his tongue
This tongue is the curtain over the door of the soul.
When a gust of wind has pushed aside the curtain,
The secret of the interior of the house is disclosed.
We see whether in that house there are pearls
Or grains of wheat, a treasure of gold
Or all scorpio's and snakes: or whether the treasure
Is there and a serpent beside it,
Since a treasure of gold is never
Without someone to keep watch.
Rumi

✷

Deep frozen stays the ice in shady places which did not see the radiance of my Sun.
But every ice that saw the Sun’s face smiling says meltingly, “I am the water that grants life.
Oh, if a tree could wander and move with foot and wings.
It would not suffer the axe’s blows and not the pain of the saw.
For would the Sun not wander away every night, how could every morning the world be lighted up?
And if the ocean’s water would not rise to the sky, how would the plants be quickened by streams and gentle rain?”
The drop that left its homeland and then returned, it found an oyster waiting and grew into a pearl.

✷

The universal soul met a separate soul
And placed a pearl on her breast.
Through such contact the soul, like Mary
Became pregnant with a heart-winning messiah.
Rumi

The discovery of treasure is by luck,
And even more it is rare.
One must earn a living
So long as the body is able.
Does earning a livelihood
Prevent the discovery of treasure?
Don't retire from work:
That treasure in deed,
Follows after the work.
Rumi

✷

Stinginess is not seeing the abundance
The prospect of pearls keeps the diver glad.
Rumi

✷

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to a better understanding of ourselves.
Carl Jung

✷

To truly know the world, look deeply within your own being; to truly know yourself, take real interest in the world.
Rudolf Steiner

✷

The more you become yourself, the more you will feel responsible for the world because the more you are becoming part of the world — you are not separate from it. Your being authentically yourself means a tremendous responsibility…"
Osho

✷

Wherever you are,
Be the soul of that place
Rumi

The ass, your fleshy soul
Has wandered off; tie it down.
How long will you run away from work?
Let it bear the burden of patience
And gratitude- whether for a hundred years,
Or for thirty or twenty.
Rumi
